Enamelist/Metalsmith Teaches Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Jewelry Classes in South Florida

Susan J. Lewis has been an enamelist and metalsmith for over twenty five years. In 1982, she opened her own studio in Ft. Lauderdale and opened the new Metalmorphosis Studio in 2006.

Since 1990, her specialty has been Custom Cloisonné Antique Boat Portraits.  She began making them for antique boat connoisseurs.  Susan’s cloisonné work has been exhibited nationally in museums and galleries.

Susan has been inspiring students all over South Florida for 18 years and has taught fabrication, enameling and PMC classes for the Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood Art and Cultural Center, and Bass Museum Art School. She was privileged to design the Jewelry Studio and the Jewelry Program for the Boca Raton Museum of Art School in 2001.  After 15 years of teaching there, Susan retired and opened Metalmorphosis Studio, where she has weekly classes and hosts Master Workshops

Eleven years ago, Susan began working with Precious Metal Clay(PMC). At her urging in 1998, weekly classes in PMC were scheduled at Boca Raton Museum
of Art School.  It became one of the first continuous PMC classes in the U.S. running from 1998 to 2006. She was certified in 1999 in Tim McCreight’s first certification class.  (See story in Studio PMC, Winter 2003, Vol. 6 No. 4)  The Miracle Metal PMC class was one of the most popular in the school.  Her work
has been published in Cece Wire’s 2007 book, New Directions in Metal Clay, Lisa Vann’s Fiberwire Beads & Jewelry,Lapidary Journal, Studio PMC, Fiberwire Beads & Jewelry, and is included in the PMC Guild CD Exhibition Precious Metal Clay—A Decade Of Serious Fun. In 2001, Susan began teaching annual PMC workshops for the Interweave Press●Bead Expo.  For the seventh year in 2008, Susan will teach in Phoenix, AZ as well as Interweave’s  BeadFestMiami and
BeadFestPhiladelphia.

In the beginning…..Susan’s  fine craft education began at Penland School of Crafts in NC, after which she earned her degree from Kent State University, Kent, OH, in Enameling and Design.  She continued her education at the University of Akron, OH, the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and in workshops with many notable instructors.

She is a member of the Society of North American Goldsmith’s, Florida Society Of Goldsmiths, Society of American Silversmiths and the PMC Guild.
